Happy Dining at Grumpy’s

Grumpy's Diner Southend

Southend-on-Sea isn’t a huge place, so I was rather surprised to learn that it has two completely separate 1950’s diners.  It seemed only fair that I compare the two 😉

Grumpy's Diner Southend On Sea

Grumpy’s Diner is the newer kid on the block, unlike Bobby Jo’s it is located away from the busy seafront. Mum and I wandered up on a Tuesday lunchtime and the colourful decor immediately put a smile on our faces.  We sat in the window so we could soak up the gorgeous sunshine.

Grumpy's Diner Milkshake

The menu is a little limited at the moment, with their main offering being steak, burgers and hotdogs.  And then there are the milkshakes.   I’d seen a picture of the bubblegum milkshake online and knew that I wanted to try it.  It didn’t disappoint.  The colour alone is enough to make you grin, but it really does taste EXACTLY like bubblegum.  Mum opted for Strawberry and while both were delicious, mine was declared the winner, because it is bright blue 🙂

Along with the drinks, we were brought some popcorn to snack on while we waited for our mains, this was pretty tasteless in my opinion, but then I’m not the biggest fan of popcorn anyway, so maybe I’m not the best person to judge.

My veggie burger was absolutely delicious – one of the best I’ve ever had.  A fresh patty made of chickpeas and sweetcorn, covered in crisp lettuce, tomato and red onion plus a slice of cheese inside a brioche bun. It came with curly fries, huge onion rings and a very creamy coleslaw.   Mum’s pulled pork got two thumbs up from her- high praise indeed.

The portions were pretty big for lunch, I couldn’t finish mine and really wanted to go for a snooze after we left.  According to our lovely server, they will be adding a lot more options to their menu soon, including more lunch friendly dishes.  Which is bound to be a winner.

I love that the kitchen is open, there is something so very reassuring about being able to see exactly what is going on back there.  The life size Betty Boop, Juke Box and other 1950’s paraphernalia really are great fun.

Grumpy’s Diner would be perfect for a big family birthday meal, especially as their prices are so budget friendly and I really want to know what they put in that milkshake to make it taste so amazing!
