MUSEUMS, MUSEUMS, MUSEUMS. I bloody love museums.
I love the order and the smell and the quiet and learning lots of (sometimes completely random) new things, I love taking a break from all that walking and grabbing a cup of coffee and a slice of cake at a museum cafe and I especially love a museum gift shop – even if I’m not actually buying anything.
So, it should come as absolutely no surprise to learn that when I was putting together my ‘flexible’ itinerary for New York I had an entire day dedicated to the Museum of Natural History.
Yes, you read that correctly, one whole entire day. we were there when the museum opened at 10am and we left when security were asking us (politely, but with a certain amount of urgency) to ‘make our way to the exit’ at 5.45pm. But with all the attractions in NYC, is it really worth spending a whole day at the Museum of Natural History? Abso-fucking-lutely.
In fact the next time I’m in New York, I’ll spend another full day there and I’ll be back again on my third trip… you get the idea.
Let me show you some of my favourite bits from our ‘day at the museum’ (back of the net!)
To be honest, I was so engrossed with all the awesome things to see in the museum, I didn’t take anywhere near enough pictures.
My absolute highlight of the day was the Rose Centre For Earth and Space, the Dark Matters Show inside the theatre, was incredible, especially the start when the stars are all rushing towards you – it felt like I was on a rocket, rushing out to space!
Lonesome George was there, you might remember that he was the Giant Tortoise from Pinta in the Galapagos. The last of his kind, he died in 2012, at around 100 years old. Can you imagine being the last of your species? Makes me wonder who will be the last ever human.
Exhibit after exhibit after exhibit, each one was fascinating. We ran out of time to see it all of course and there are things that I want to go back and see in more detail. This was, without a doubt one of the best things I did in New Y ork, so I would definitely suggest that you go too!
//Plan your visit before you get there to save time, the Museum website is full of really useful information
// Adult entry is $22 for one day + extra for shows, but this is the recommended amount to pay, if you can’t stay all day, or want to go, but can’t afford the ticket price, you can pay whatever you’re able to
